Insect Identification

Fleas:

  • Color: Dark brown
  • Size: Less than 1/4 inch
  • Other distinct features: Narrow, several spines across body including near the head, several hairs across body, wingless
  • Fleas are not only an annoyance to pets, but can also cause hair loss and skin damage. They also transmit murine typhus to humans.

Signs of a Flea Infestation:

  • Flea activity seen, but severity unknown
  • Pets excessively scratching
  • Pets have reddened/irritated skin
  • Small, black excrement present in pet’s fur
  • Flea bites on humans usually occur around ankles and lower legs

Bed Bugs:

  • Color: Mahogany to red-brown
  • Shape: Flat, broad oval when unfed; swollen and elongated when fed
  • Size: 1/4 inch long
  • Bed bugs do not transmit disease, but their bites can cause red, itchy welts.

Signs of a Bed Bug Infestation:

  • Specks of blood or feces on linens, furniture, mattresses and other areas where bed bugs may be hiding
  • Sightings of the bug, eggshells or shed skins
  • Hiding in the cracks and crevices associated with mattresses, cushions, bed frames and other structures

Cockroaches:

  • Size: 1/2 to 5/8 inches long
  • Color: Light brown
  • Other distinct features: Wings (but they can’t fly), two black lines from the head to the wings, wide and flat body
  • Cockroaches can carry bacteria and viruses. They can also cause allergic reactions that include skin rashes, congestion, watery eyes, and asthma.

Signs of a Cockroach Infestation:

  • Roach droppings/dark specs
  • If seen foraging during the day, population is likely large
  • As population grows, more are forced out of shelter
  • Overflowing population in one location

Mosquitoes:

  • Color: Brown, with a darker proboscis, thorax, wings, and tarsi, and a lighter brown head and center
  • Size: Approximately 3.96 to 4.25 millimeters long
  • Other distinct features: the abdomen has pale, narrow, rounded bands that take on a half-moon shape
  • Most known for malaria, mosquitoes are also vectors of other diseases such as Dengue fever, yellow fever, chikungunya, West Nile and the Zika virus.

Signs of Mosquito Infestation:

  • Sightings of mosquitoes in enclosed spaces like garages, sheds, and under or inside homes to survive cold temperatures
  • Mosquito larvae in standing water on your property
  • Depending on the species, most activity takes place from dusk to dawn

Perimeter Pests:

  • House flies are known for their red colored eyes
  • Ants can be identified by their three distinct body regions: head, thorax and abdomen as well as antennae

Signs of a Perimeter Pest:

  • The most common sign of a house fly infestation is the presence of the flies, themselves – often found near garbage/refuse areas
  • Most species of ants nest underground, while some can be found in compromised wood, dead mulch, leaf litter and gutters
